Dear Colleagues and Friends,
We can think about the recent LABCI held in Montevideo in numbers: more than 500 participants, 70 concurrent sessions, 10 plenaries, more than 15 sponsors, over 20 nationalities and countries present, 30 years of LABCI, 15 conferences and the 3rd time held in Uruguay. Impressive, indeed, but the recent LABCI experience in Montevideo goes beyond numbers, because there is an inherent qualitative element in LABCI that can only be described with adjectives such as astonishing, enlightening, thought-provoking and many more.
The LABCI conference spanned two and a half days, but its echoes will reverberate for much much longer. As Jeremy Harmer stated in his brilliant closing plenary: “every ending is a new beginning”. That new beginning is the time for reflection and for putting things into perspective and practice after the conference. All the ones who attended the conference have somehow or other been touched by the experience, and that will surely be reflected in their teaching practice. That is the main value of a conference of such magnitude.
The Anglo being a very proud member of LABCI would like to thank all the ones who participated in this conference for making it possible.

CONFERENCE - ABOUT LABCI
The “Culturas”- the British Cultural Institutes in Latin America with the exception of Buenos Aires, founded in 1927, were all founded at about the same time, and for the same reasons.
- There are “Culturas” (Association of Latin American British Cultural Institutes) in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. Together they have around 250,000 students.
- The Beginning: in the early 80’s a British Council Director brought together a small group of British Institutes in Latin America to explore possibilities of co-operation.
- The First Conference: as a result of that meeting plans were laid for the first conference, which took place in Montevideo in 1985, and was a success.
- Consolidation and Growth: regular meetings between institute directors began to take place and the conferences became recognized as a major ELT event.
The LABCI Conference
Every two years LABCI holds an ELT congress in a member country. The conferences attract good numbers of teachers and academic coordinators, and for this reason sponsorship from publishers and other ELT suppliers.
